September's star attraction must be the 'Wynn Macau - 20th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest', with former champion teams assembling once again in Macau to cross pyrotechnic swords. While watching the spectacular nighttime shows overhead, you can also enjoy a glass of fabulous wine at the Italian Festival at Macau Tower. And if you're around on September 14 (Mid-Autumn Festival), you should walk to the nearby Nam Van Lake Nautical Centre to catch the water lantern event.

Macau Government Tourist Office hosts its annual tray race on World Tourism Day, with souvenirs distributed to lucky visitors on that day! The Macau SAR Government Headquarters Open Day is a once-a-year event when the government invites visitors to see the splendid 'palace' that the Chief Executive and his Secretaries use to receive guests and host various official functions. Miss Macau Beauty Pageant returns by popular demand to select the territory's most beguiling lady. Experienced wedding planners are preparing to meet you at the 17th Wedding, Banquet, Beauty & Jewellery Expo . . . and Wynn Macau is hosting its 2nd World Mahjong Series. Cirque du Solei has unveiled the show 'ZAIA' after the official premiere on August 28.

HUSH!! Full Band 2008 translates into a day of non-stop rock, while at the other end of the musical spectrum Macau Orchestra's new season presents 'Passion for Opera and Scheherazade', 'Vienna Classics' and 'Flourishing Art'. Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra (Junior) is going to feature popular music at the 'Upbeat' Concert - and Avril Lavigne drops into Macau for her Asia Live Tour. Famous Hong Kong songbird Rosanne Lui is also shaping up to share her music with the 'Encore Good Music' Evening Concert.

The Black Box Theatre Series delivers an intimate performance from a 'spaceless' platform - and 'Dying Young' is moving to Macau for the first time. What's Theatresports? Check it out - then join in!

Strip away the years and sense the timeless elegance of Lou Kau Mansion. And once again, taxi ambassadors will assist visitors outside the Macau Ferry Terminal and Macau International Airport to get where they're going with the minimum of fuss. Churches play an important role in the life of Macau so the 'Free Guided Tour of Macau Churches' is going to give you all the details. Communications Museum's Olympic Games activity has been launched until next year.

'Spirits Alive: Figures and Portraits from the Ming and Qing Dynasties' exhibition presents the famous figure paintings of the Ming and Qing . . . and three young local artists show their solo exhibitions - 'WORK OF MYSELF Chapter 3' by Yuen Wai Ip; the 'Installation Exhibition' by Irene Cheong; and the 'Involuntary Consumption Disorder' exhibition by Kent Ieong.

13 Sep to 12 Oct - Involuntary Consumption Disorder - Works by Kent Ieong

The young local artist Kent Ieong's childhood was spent on the streets and in the lanes of his home town, and what he often laid his hands on were not typical textbooks but rather those disposable imaginative magazines and comic serials. Indeed, such images of consumerism have played an important part in all our lives. It's continuously consuming our 'time', our 'emotions', our 'youth' and our 'lives' - while we indulge in secular pleasures and fantasy.

This exhibition is his first solo, and will feature ten of his works, including paintings, installations and videos - all of which invite us to absorb aspects of 21st Century consumerism.

Travel Notes of A Museum Explorer

The Scent of Wine – The Wine Museum

I used to know nothing about wine. Once I was sent to buy a bottle of port but brought rum home instead - much to the amusement of the family! This time, I'm coming to Macau for a wine lesson.

The Wine Museum is located in the basement of the Tourism Activities Centre of Macau. Set out like a Portuguese wine warehouse, the informative, interactive displays chart the value and development of the wine industry on the Iberian Peninsula, the production tools, barrels, donkey carts, goat skin containers, bronze distillery vats and all the other paraphernalia that goes into winemaking.

My friend discovered that the museum has strict security so he guessed that the wine must be very valuable. That's true! Over thousands of bottles of wine are stored here and one of the rarest - and most valuable - is the 1815 port. Portugal is one of many places producing superior wines but it's only in recent years that the secret has got out about just how good they are. Besides learning about the intricacies of winemaking, you can find information about the origins of different costumes to further enrich your knowledge of Portuguese viniculture.

While fancying a glass of wine, to my surprise a free drink was offered at the exit. I tried a Douro - fine and sweet - and at last bought a bottle of port for my friend - now that I know what to look for!

It's not easy to find a wine museum in Asia, especially one that so seamlessly blends East with West, which on top of everything made my trip so memorable.

Opening Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Closed on Tuesdays)
Address: Rua Luis Gonzaga Gomes 431, basement (Tourism Activities Centre - CAT).
Tickets: MOP$15 (Adult-including wine tasting), 5 (From aged 11 to 18), Free of charge (under 10 and seniors over 60)
